United States-born cleric linked terror network Al Qaeda, Anwar al-Awlaki was killed in Yemen. The man who dubbed by U.S. authorities as a "global terrorist" was killed along with several members of Al Qaeda in an air strike.
"Terrorists Anwar al-Awlaki has been killed along with several colleagues," the Yemeni Defense Ministry statement as quoted by Reuters news agency on Friday (09/30/2011). The Ministry did not provide detailed information regarding the incident.
But according to a Yemeni security official, Awlaki was killed in an air strike. Some members of Al Qaeda also killed along with his double nationality Yemeni-Americans.
Not yet clear whether the air strike was carried out by Yemeni forces or whether Awlaki killed in drone attack U.S. property. Earlier in May, U.S. drones have targeted Awlaki Yemeni descent but the man escaped from the attack.
Awlaki U.S. have long hunted for alleged involvement in the bombing of an airliner pilots U.S. goals in 2009 and then by the group Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). Awlaki who is fluent in English and Arabic was often called for attacks against the United States.
