The semi-final round of 24 has been eliminated, so the show will go immediately to the top 12. How those top twelve will be chosen is unclear, as neither FOX nor show producers would give any details.
Finalists will have contests challenging them to promote themselves, make the best music video, and create an awards show-type performance with a band and dancers. Chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records Jimmy Iovine will act as an in-house mentor, and theme nights will now focus on specific decades instead of artists.
There is a larger applicant pool this season now that fifteen year olds can compete, and Lythgoe said that contestants are showing a broader range of musical style and talent, including country, jazz, and indie.
As far as the judges go, Lythgoe seems pleased. Of Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez, he said, “They both listen intently, and don’t make glib remarks. They give honest critiques.” Lythgoe also sees a change in Randy Jackson. “Randy is pulling his weight,” he said. “He really has stepped up. He’s essentially come out of himself. He’s enjoying being in that position.”
